A few years ago, our founder and executive director David Smith had a vision. A vision to get kids who were cooped up inside, out into the great outdoors and help them connect with youth. As someone who loves the outdoors, staying active and traveling, he wanted to give kids who may not otherwise have an opportunity to, the chance to love what he does.
The adventures started as a couple of camps and trips to local parks. A few years later, we now do camps throughout the year, visit local parks and places of interest and also venture around the country to our national parks. Our founder also feels strongly that if we can help youth understand and appreciate the natural beauty our parks provide access to, they will become dedicated to preserving our environment at an early age. The earlier youth learn about the importance of sustainability, the better chance we have of succeeding in our efforts to preserve our environment for generations to come.
One of the biggest goals of Get Kids Outside is to help kids from underprivileged and impoverished backgrounds participate at no cost to their families. We never want a child to feel unable to participate due to financial circumstances, nor do we want to add to a parent’s financial strain. Get Kids Outside believe all children should have every resource possible to get out there, into the great outdoors. Our story starts with our founder realizing the value of getting all kids away from the tethers of technology and giving them an opportunities to see the wonders of the outdoors, while also socializing with kids their own age and learning valuable life skills. Our story has just begun, help us write each chapter…
