small waterfall surrounded by forest at yellowstone national park

Yellowstone National Park 2023

September 17th - 24th, 2023

Overview

Did you know Yellowstone is the world’s first national park? It became a park on March 1, 1872, and features 2.2 million acres of beauty. That’s a lot of land to backpack in, and we’ll be doing just that!

There are endless wonders of nature here, like the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, countless wildlife species, beautiful mountains, and of course, Old Faithful. This geyser is a great display of mother nature’s power, and it erupts once every 44 minutes to 2 hours!

Yellowstone National Park Itinerary

We will fly into Bozeman, MT. Pick up time at the airport will be 2:00pm. We will take our rental car from the airport to Gardiner MT. Prior to leaving Bozeman we will stop at Walmart and REI for needed supplies for the trip. We will get settled in our hotel, and maybe do a small hike that evening.

This will be our early morning day, leaving well before light to get out and spend the day looking for wolves. We will also make stops to one of the original pen sites from the 1995 Wolf Reintroduction Project, and will visit an actual wolf den site.

Hiking 3-5 miles
Wildlife

Today we will hit the famous parts of the park, such as a visit to Lake Yellowstone, and Artist Point, to view the most photographed waterfall in the park. We will also see Mud Volcano, and of course, Old Faithful. We will spend the night in West Yellowstone.

Hiking 3-5 miles

Today we will backpack into one of the most remote parts of the park. We will need to check into ranger station by 10:00 AM for our safety orientation. Once we have completed that, we will hike into the Bechler Region, where we will spend the night at our backcountry campsite.

Hiking 5-7 miles

After we wake up from our starry night, we will have a day hike from our campsite. We have a 6.4-mile hike to visit several waterfalls, before returning to camp.

Hiking 6-8 miles

Today we will break camp and head upriver to see another set of waterfalls, and visit some inviting hot springs. After our soak in the hot springs, we will head down to our next campsite.

Hiking 7-9 miles

After we break camp and make sure our campfire is 100% out, we will head back to our starting point. Once back to the car, we will head up to Ennis, MT., for the night. In Ennis, we will be met by two famous adventurers who will treat us to a real Montana BBQ dinner. We will spend the night at the lodge of a world class mountain climber that has climbed Mount Everest, and a World Class Photographer and Fly Fisherman. Dinner is included.

After a hardy breakfast, we will head back to Bozeman to catch our flights home. We should arrive at the airport by 10:00 AM. Please make sure your flight leaves after noon.

Note on Itinerary:
